The incident took place in Norwalk at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Brien McMahon High School field during a game.
According to Sgt. Sofia Gulino, of the Norwalk Police, the assault took place on the field during the game.
Following an investigation, Norwalk Police arrested Christopher Polk, age 32, of Norwalk on Tuesday, Oct. 4, Gulino said.
When police were dispatched to the field on Sunday, they located the unconscious man laying on the field, along with a large crowd of adult and child game spectators, Gulino said.
Multiple witnesses came forward, identifying Polk as the suspect, and providing a description of him, she added.
According to witnesses, Polk had used a football helmet to strike the victim in the head and was last seen walking away from the area, police said.
Paramedics were immediately called to the scene and transported the victim to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of his serious injuries.
Officers were unable to locate Polk and a warrant was prepared for his arrest, Gulino said.
"Polk was provided with opportunities to turn himself in but refused to comply," she added.
Investigators of the Special Services Division received information about where Polk was living but attempts to contact him went unanswered, police said.
Surveillance was established in the area and Polk was taken into custody on Thursday.
The victim in this incident has since been released from Norwalk Hospital and is recovering from his injuries, Gulino said.
Polk was charged with:
- Assault
- Risk of injury to a minor
- Breach of peace
He is being held on a $75,000 bond.
